10 Years of Recognizing Excellence: Mason’s Delta Omega Chapter Celebrates Tenth Anniversary and National Public Health Week

The College of Public Health is proud to mark the milestone of the tenth anniversary of the establishment of the Gamma Tau chapter of The Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health. Delta Omega’s mission is to promote excellence in the field of public health and improve the health of individuals both domestically and internationally.

Over the past decade, Mason has inducted 108 Master’s students, 39 undergraduate students, and two faculty members (Dr. Laura Poms and Dr. Lila Fleming) into the Gamma Tau chapter of Delta Omega. This year, the chapter will be inducting its first cohort of PhD students, further expanding its reach in honoring academic achievements in public health.

Carolyn Drews-Botsch, professor and chair of Global and Community Health, highlighted the significance of having a Delta Omega chapter at Mason in recognizing the academic excellence of students and faculty. She emphasized that Mason continues to excel in public health education, research, and practice, with its students serving as a testament to its success.

The impact of Delta Omega can be seen through the accomplishments of its alumni who have gone on to pursue successful careers in public health fields. Bianca Alba is now a Public Health Analyst at the Health Resources and Services Administration after serving as a mentor in Mason’s Public Health Alumni Mentorship Program. Abby Lilak conducted research in Kenya during her MS in Global Health before pursuing a PhD at University Florida. Taylor Thomas credits her experience at Mason for igniting her passion for population health as she pursues her Master’s degree at George Washington University.

In addition to celebrating their tenth anniversary, Mason’s Delta Omega chapter is observing National Public Health Week 2024 by volunteering with organizations such as Patriot Pantry and Presidents Park Greenhouse. Their commitment to public health reflects their dedication to advancing the well-being of communities through service and leadership.

Mason’s College of Public Health is thrilled about this recognition as it serves as an affirmation that their efforts towards promoting excellence in public health are bearing fruit.

As they look forward to what lies ahead for them, they are grateful for their journey so far and excited about what they can achieve next.

Overall, it’s clear that Mason’s Gamma Tau chapter has made significant contributions towards improving public health outcomes both domestically and internationally through academic recognition programs like Delta Omega Honorary Society In Public Health
