Teen football player suffers anaphylactic shock from cough medicine

A 14-year-old boy who plays football at an academy in Gia Lai was rushed to Hung Vuong Gia Lai Hospital for emergency treatment after consuming a candy-like cough medicine. He developed papular rashes all over his body that were swollen, red, and itchy, along with difficulty swallowing, a choking sensation in his neck, and trouble breathing. The doctor diagnosed him with Quincke’s edema (angioedema) – a dangerous complication of anaphylaxis. His family mentioned that he had been consuming cough pills bought from the pharmacy.

The severe reaction was attributed to an allergy to the candy-like lozenges. Doctors administered emergency treatment for anaphylactic shock, including adrenaline, warming, rehydration, and oxygen. By April 3, the patient’s condition had stabilized and he was expected to be discharged in a few days.
