72-Year-Old Meritorious Artist Overcomes Severe Complications from Diabetes with Amputation Surgery

Meritorious Artist Bang Thai, 72 years old, recently underwent surgery to amputate half of his right foot due to diabetic necrosis. Nguyen Bang Thai has been battling diabetes for over a decade and has experienced severe complications as a result. For the past two years, he has been bedridden, experiencing numbness, burning sensations, chronic pain, and insomnia in both feet.

Nearly three months ago, a necrotic ulcer appeared on his right leg, which eventually led to the amputation of his toe. However, the wound continued to deteriorate, prompting him to seek treatment at Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi. Dr. Nguyen Duc Hung explained that the patient’s twisted blood vessels and atherosclerosis made the intervention challenging. Without immediate treatment, there was a high risk of infection spreading throughout the body.

A team of specialists performed surgery on Mr. Thai to remove the necrotic tissue, revascularize his leg, and amputate half of his foot to prevent further complications. Following the surgery, Mr. Thai experienced less pain and better sleep, allowing for improved management of his diabetes. He continues to receive treatment for his condition and psychological support to overcome depression.

Despite his health challenges, Nguyen Bang Thai has had an illustrious career in the arts with numerous works under his name.

Doctors advised Mr. Thai to quit smoking, avoid sugary drinks and maintain proper foot care to prevent future complications.

Diabetes-related foot issues are common among the elderly and can lead to severe infections necessitating amputation.

Regular screenings for diabetes are recommended for high-risk groups especially the elderly.

Through proper care and treatment Nguyen Bang Thai hopes to continue pursuing artistic endeavors while managing diabetes effectively.
