Health for All: World Health Day 2024

The world is facing numerous challenges that are putting the right to health of millions at risk. Diseases and disasters continue to pose a threat to human lives, while conflicts devastate communities by causing death, pain, hunger, and psychological distress. Environmental issues such as air pollution from the burning of fossil fuels are also compromising our access to clean air.

According to the WHO Council on the Economics of Health for All, at least 140 countries recognize health as a human right in their constitutions. However, many of these countries have not implemented laws that ensure their populations have access to essential health services. As a result, over half of the world’s population or approximately 4.5 billion people were not fully covered by necessary health services in 2021.

To address these challenges, the theme for World Health Day 2024 is ‘My health, my right’. This theme aims to advocate for everyone’s right to access quality healthcare services regardless of location. It also emphasizes the importance of accessing education and information about health as well as safe drinking water, clean air, good nutrition, quality housing, decent working conditions, and a clean environment. Additionally, it highlights the significance of freedom from discrimination in accessing healthcare services.
