In an effort to further peace negotiations between Hamas and Israel, Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen), head of the Palestinian Authority, arrived in Doha on February 11. He was eager to meet with members of the Hamas Politburo to discuss a proposal he had in mind. The Qatari government has been acting as a mediator between the two parties, and Abbas hoped to use their influence to bring about a meeting with the leaders of the Hamas political leadership.
His main goal was to form a government of technocrats within the Palestinian Authority. This new body would be responsible for overseeing the restoration of the Gaza Strip, which has been severely impacted by years of conflict. To ensure international support for this initiative, Abbas planned to make this new body under international control. This would allow for funds to be transferred for the reconstruction of the sector, bringing much-needed aid and resources to those affected by the conflict.
Abbas’s arrival in Doha marks another important step towards finding a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel. With the help of mediators like Qatar, it is hoped that both sides can come together and work towards a brighter future for all involved.
