The Prime Minister Congratulates New Secretary General of the CE

Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan congratulated Alain Berse on his election as the Secretary General of the Council of Europe. In a press release, Pashinyan highlighted the importance of the 75th anniversary of the Council amidst complex geopolitical challenges in Europe and beyond. He emphasized the need for a strong Council to uphold democracy and human rights during these challenging times.

Pashinyan expressed confidence in Berse’s ability to promote universal values, protect human rights, and ensure effective functioning of the convention system. He pledged his full support for Berse’s mission in advancing fundamental values and principles within the Council of Europe’s geographic area. Berse, who served as President of Switzerland before taking up his new role, was elected as Secretary General on June 25th, succeeding Maria Pejcinovich Burich.

The appointment of Berse is significant given the evolving role of the Council in protecting human rights and democratic principles. With increasing threats to democracy and human rights, Berse will play a crucial role in navigating these complexities and strengthening the impact of the organization. With Pashinyan’s support and that of other governments across Europe, Berse’s tenure is expected to focus on defending universal values and promoting peace within the Council of Europe.
