Baker Hughes chosen to develop natural gas and hydrogen technology

On April 3, Baker Hughes announced that it has been chosen by Snam, an energy infrastructure company from Italy, to provide turbines for compression that can operate on natural gas and gas blends with up to 10% hydrogen. This collaboration will see Baker Hughes deliver three NovaLT 12 gas turbine-driven compressor trains for a gas compressor station in Sulmona, Italy. The new gas compressor station will play a vital role in decarbonizing Snam’s gas network infrastructure as part of the Adriatic Line project.

The innovative project aims to transport energy supplies from Azerbaijan, Africa, and the Eastern Mediterranean region to northern Europe via a 425-km long hydrogen-ready pipeline. By doing so, this ambitious project will significantly contribute to the decarbonization of gas networks and enable the creation of a hydrogen economy in the region. Ganesh Ramaswamy, Executive Vice President of Industrial & Energy Technology at Baker Hughes, emphasized the importance of collaboration in developing technology solutions for decarbonizing energy ecosystems.

Ramaswamy highlighted the company’s commitment to driving innovation and supporting the transition to clean energy sources. The NovaLT12 gas turbine technology is a testament to Baker Hughes’ efforts to provide sustainable solutions that meet the evolving needs of the energy industry.
