Beijing 2022: The Games of Muted Joy

In the winter of 2012, several cities began bidding to host the XXIV Olympic Winter Games, which were set to take place in 2022. Among these cities were Beijing, China and Almaty, Kazakhstan. However, as the years passed and 2015 approached, many of these cities dropped out of the running.

On July 31, 2015, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) made a historic decision. They chose Beijing over Almaty to host the 2022 Games. Beijing’s bid won by a vote of 44-40. This decision made Beijing the first city to be awarded both the Summer and Winter Games.

However, even as Beijing prepared for the games, the COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges. Many athletes, coaches, support staff and high-level officials were unable to attend due to restrictions and concerns related to the virus. Those who did attend had to adhere to strict COVID protocols and were required to travel only after meeting certain health and safety requirements. Upon arrival in Beijing, they were greeted by individuals wearing full hazmat suits who were responsible for conducting testing.
