China Nearing Completion of Australia Wine Tariff Removal, Says Business Leader

The Australian government is reportedly optimistic that the Chinese government will lift heavy tariffs on Australian wine imports, a development that could pave the way for increased trade relations between the two countries. According to a recent report by the Australia China Business Council (ACBC), Beijing has shown signs of “opening up” to foreign investment, and this positive trend was emphasized during a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

However, despite this promising news, ACBC National President David Olsson has cautioned against high expectations that all producers will return to the market once the sanctions are lifted. In an interview with Bloomberg at the Boao Forum in China, Olsson highlighted concerns from Australian businesses about the need for predictability and certainty when it comes to long-term investments in the Chinese market. He acknowledged that while there is an increasing appreciation for the significance of the China market among Australian business leaders, they are not expecting a complete return to pre-tariff conditions due to ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Trade relations between Australia and China have improved since May 2022 when Labor was elected as center-left government. Beijing has gradually eased trade sanctions on Australian exports during tensions, including restrictions on barley, timber, and coal. However, some of the most significant remaining sanctions are still imposed on Australian wine, with tariffs as high as 218%.
