ST. PETER — St. Peter senior Marty Anderson certified for the Class A person state tennis meet once again, but this time in singles play.
Anderson lived up to his No. 1 sectional seed by outslugging No. two-seeded Michael Frost of Holy Family members Catholic in a 3-set championship clash, six-1, three-six, six-four, in the course of Thursday’s final round of the Section two person meet at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.
Frost later duplicated his state singles bid from 2022 by fending off Blue Earth Region netter Joe Frundt’s correct-second challenge by a six-1, six- selection.
Anderson and Frost open state person singles play at eight a.m. Thursday, June eight, at the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
Anderson, a Gustavus Adolphus College tennis commit, gained Thursday’s sectional finale by fending off Frundt, six-1, 7-five, in the course of their semifinal clash, when Frost posted back-to-back six-two set wins more than Blue Earth Area’s Jamie Johnson in their semifinal bout.
Frundt then captured the Section two bronze medal by defeating Johnson in the third-spot match, six-, six-1. Each Blue Earth Region players earned all-sectional honors by putting in the best 4.
Litchfield’s Alex Draeger and Braden Olson also garnered return trips to the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center by outlasting St. Peter’s Anders Dixon and Will Elias in the sectional doubles championship, 7-six (7-four), six-, on Thursday.
Draeger and Olson, Section two state doubles qualifiers final spring, opened semifinal action with back-to-back six-1 set wins more than St. James Area’s Andrei Rivera and Brennan Kern earlier Thursday in St. Peter.
Dixon and Elias gained the doubles finals by rallying to fend off Southwest Christian’s Garrett Lyles and Sean Johnson in a 3-set semifinal marathon, four-six, 7-five, six-two.
Lyles and Johnson, even so, rallied to defeat Rivera and Kern in an extended third-spot match, five-7, six-1, six-, to avoid a correct-second challenge for a state berth.
