TikTok Lite, an extension application of the popular social media platform TikTok, is currently being investigated by the European Commission for its impact on minors and potential risks associated with addictive behaviors. ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has decided to voluntarily suspend the reward functions of TikTok Lite as they collaborate with the authorities to address concerns raised.
ByteDance has a history of working constructively with authorities and has stated that they always prioritize the safety and well-being of their users. In a brief statement shared on social media, ByteDance announced the suspension of reward features in TikTok Lite while they investigate the concerns raised by the authorities.
Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for the Internal Market, acknowledged this decision and emphasized the importance of protecting children from potential risks associated with social media platforms. He highlighted concerns about addictive behavior risks and applauded TikTok’s decision to suspend the reward program in the EU.
Breton indicated that cases against TikTok continue due to the platform’s addictive potential and emphasized the need for the Digital Services Law to ensure the safety of the European online space. The investigation into TikTok Lite is ongoing, but ByteDance has stated that they are committed to addressing any concerns raised by authorities and ensuring that their users have a safe and positive experience on their platforms.
