Iona Prep Students Win Division Awards at Regeneron Science Fair

Two students from Iona Prep recently received division awards at the 2024 Regeneron Westchester Science & Engineering Fair. Junior Mateo Del Rio Lanse was recognized for his exceptional work in Computer Science, while senior Aydan Gerber earned a Division Award in Behavioral Science. The event took place on March 16th at Somers High School, with the awards ceremony held on Thursday.

Aydan Gerber developed an algorithm using Python to conduct keyword-frequency analysis and Latent Dirichlet Allocation to identify significant topics of discussion under the #sustainability hashtag on Twitter. His findings were published by Cambridge University Press in February. On the other hand, Mateo Del Rio Lanse improved machine-learning rates by developing three convolutional neural networks (CNNs) that can screen for tumors in brain scans.

The Regeneron Westchester Science & Engineering Fair (WESEF) aims to encourage students to engage in hands-on scientific research by providing a platform to showcase their work. The top 20 projects from the fair will advance to the Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair. With their innovative projects and recognition at the fair, Aydan Gerber and Mateo Del Rio Lanse are not only setting an example for others but also contributing to the future of science and technology.
