The advanced Danish warship faced multiple weapon issues while confronting the Houthis

Denmark’s most modern corvette, Iver Huitfeldt, experienced problems with its radar, combat system, and 76 mm cannon during a mission in the Red Sea. Lieutenant Colonel Sune Lund, commander of the corvette, sent an internal message to superiors detailing these issues.

Iver Huitfeldt is part of a class of anti-aircraft defense ships that were put into service in 2011 and are the most modern warships of the Danish navy. The corvette encountered problems with its APAR radar specialized in fire control and the C-Flex combat management system, which prevented it from firing long-range air defense missiles within 30 minutes. Additionally, the 76 mm artillery shells on board were damaged during the mission.

Lieutenant Colonel Lund expressed concern over the safety implications of using unstable shells in the warship’s ammunition depot. The Danish Ministry of Defense has initiated an investigation into the corvette’s combat activities in the Red Sea, but has not confirmed the details reported by the media.

This incident with Iver Huitfeldt is not unique as European warships have faced challenges while responding to threats in the Red Sea before. Germany’s advanced missile guard ship Sachsen experienced a misfire when it launched missiles at a suspicious UAV, resulting in a costly mistake. These instances highlight the difficulties and risks faced by modern warships during combat operations.
