Despite the festivities of the Fourth of July, Detroit has been ranked as one of the cities with the worst air quality in the world. According to IQAir, a global comparison of air quality in cities worldwide, Detroit is listed as No. 4 for worst air quality among major cities with a large population.
When air quality falls into the unhealthy range, it poses risks to everyone, especially vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, pregnant individuals and those with cardiac and pulmonary diseases. It’s crucial for people to limit their time outdoors during periods of poor air quality.
Other cities in Southeast Michigan are also experiencing unhealthy conditions including Grosse Pointe Park, Clinton Township, St. Clair Shores, Oak Park, Berkley, Madison Heights, Dearborn and Dearborn Heights. In addition to the poor air quality, the National Weather Service has predicted isolated severe storms for Friday afternoon. These storms could bring winds of up to 60 miles per hour or more and hail that is one inch in diameter. Although the risk for storms is minimal, they are expected to occur between 4 and 10 p.m. For real-time updates on weather conditions in Southeast Michigan, stay tuned to our CBS Detroit NEXT Weather team.
