Presbyopia, often referred to as the “look of age,” is a widespread cause of visual disturbances that typically starts in one’s fifties. People may struggle to read small print on newspapers or medicine bottles, prompting them to use reading glasses. In Western countries, reading glasses are widely available in pharmacies, stores, and kiosks. However, access to affordable reading glasses can be challenging in developing countries, resulting in significant consequences such as decreased income and the inability to perform tasks that require close vision.
In response to this issue, an international team of healthcare workers, vision specialists, and sociologists distributed reading glasses to villagers in Bangladesh as part of a Thrive project in 2017. The research found that providing reading glasses significantly enhanced the quality of life and increased the income of those affected by presbyopia by about 38%.
The study’s findings were published in the science journal Plos One and emphasized the impact of providing reading glasses to communities in need. The researchers discovered that a simple and cost-effective solution like distributing reading glasses can have a profound effect on individuals’ ability to work and support their families. With millions of villages worldwide, the distribution of reading glasses could potentially benefit many more people who require them.
Overall, the study highlighted the importance of addressing vision problems like presbyopia in developing countries and how simple interventions can improve individuals’ lives positively. By making affordable reading glasses accessible, communities can enhance their overall well-being and economic stability.
