Exploring Trekkopje on Mars: A Stationary Study with MAHLI and APXS

In the Sol 1386 plan, our rover has been stationed in one location to conduct a check-up on its wheels using MAHLI. This is a crucial task to ensure the mobility system is functioning properly, and it will help us continue our journey on Mars. Ryan Anderson, a planetary scientist at the USGS Astrogeology Science Center and a member of the ChemCam team on MSL, provided insights into the planned activities for the rover.

Instead of driving, we will use APXS and MAHLI observations to study Trekkopje, which is located south of Baynes Mountains and Helgas Dune. We will begin with atmospheric measurements using Mastcam before analyzing Trekkopje with ChemCam. Afterward, we will document our observations with Mastcam while also capturing small mosaics to study the rim of a nearby crater.

It’s essential to note that these planned activities may be subject to change due to various factors related to the Martian environment, communication relays, and the rover’s status. Despite this uncertainty, we remain committed to conducting thorough research and analysis on Mars to further our understanding of this fascinating planet.
