Fight Against Polio: The Urgent Need for Continued Efforts in Pakistan and Afghanistan

The fight against polio continues in Pakistan and Afghanistan, with Pakistan launching an eradication campaign in 1994 to combat the spread of the disease. Although the country has made significant progress, with only five cases reported so far this year, there is still much work to be done.

Despite administering over 300 million doses of oral vaccine each year with the support of at least 350,000 vaccinators, health workers and security officials accompanying them face harassment, ridicule, threats, and physical attacks. Over the past three decades, at least 102 health workers have been killed, including some during recent campaigns.

In addition to facing violence and resistance to vaccination efforts, health workers in Pakistan also struggle with low pay, salary delays, and difficult working conditions. Some workers report earning as little as 1,360 rupees (approximately $5) for an eight-hour day. Polio survivors who are part of the eradication campaign receive limited transport and health benefits, forcing them to navigate challenging terrain and weather conditions while carrying out their work.

The fight against polio is a complex one that requires sustained effort from all stakeholders involved. While progress has been made in reducing the number of cases reported in Pakistan, it is important to continue working towards a polio-free future for everyone.

However despite these efforts by the government and other stakeholders the spread of polio continues in Pakistan which poses a serious threat not only to its own citizens but also to neighboring countries such as Afghanistan where polio remains endemic.

It is important for governments around the world to recognize the importance of addressing this issue and provide additional resources and support to those on the front lines fighting against polio. Only then can we hope for a future where no child will suffer from this preventable disease again.

In conclusion it’s clear that despite significant progress made by Pakistan’s eradication campaign there is still much work left to be done in order
