Finland Plans to Establish a National Hydrogen Transmission Network by 2030

In the near future, Finland will establish a hydrogen market with the help of its national hydrogen transmission network. Gasgrid, the company responsible for gas transmission, has unveiled a preliminary plan for Finland’s hydrogen backbone network. The aim is to create an open hydrogen market by 2030 and develop a hydrogen infrastructure that meets operators’ needs.

The initial phase of the hydrogen transmission network will focus on building infrastructure primarily in the coastal area of Finland. This decision was influenced by several factors, including the location of wind power projects on the west coast and the significant carbon dioxide emissions coming from southern Finland. However, plans for expanding the network in the future include areas in eastern, central, and northern Finland where new wind or solar power production can be developed.

Gasgrid is set to begin mapping out concrete route alternatives for the network starting in spring 2024. Feedback on these route options will be gathered from companies and project developers involved in advancing the hydrogen economy. There is a collective effort to support the development of this infrastructure and foster a thriving hydrogen market in Finland.
