Florida Gators sensation Jac Caglianone, ranked No. 5 by CBS Sports in the upcoming Major League Baseball amateur draft, had a rollercoaster Monday afternoon. The game was against North Carolina State as part of the Men’s College World Series. Caglianone, who started the game for the Gators on the mound, was pulled after just one inning. During that time, he allowed a run on a hit and two walks while his pitch velocity was down, with his fastball sitting in the 88-91 mph range. This was unusual for him as he has typically been able to top out in the upper 90s in previous games.
After leaving the mound, Caglianone made an impact on offense by hitting a three-run shot, putting the Gators ahead of NC State by 4-1. He went up to bat twice more during the afternoon and managed to get on base both times through intentional walks. Despite his performance on Monday, Caglianone denied any injuries or physical problems after the game. Prior to this appearance, he had impressive statistics with an ERA of 4.71 and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 1.71. However, it seems like some pitching-related deficiencies may have hindered his command at times during this outing
