Eli Dudley, a six-year-old boy with special needs, has always loved watching sports but was unable to participate due to his abilities. His father, Matt Dudley, felt it was essential for Eli to have the chance to experience the joy of playing sports like any other child. That’s when A.J. Lacy, the Bedford County Parks and Recreation Athletic Coordinator, came up with an adaptive sports program that allows children with disabilities to participate in sports they love.
Eli’s newfound love of baseball is evident as he practices every Sunday under Coach Amanda Craig. The team’s name is the Warriors, and they have grown from seven kids playing basketball to 25 kids playing baseball this spring. This program not only brings joy to Eli but also his family and others like them who are no longer able to play sports outside with friends. It emphasizes that these sports are not competitive but simply for fun, which is what makes it unique and special for everyone involved.
