General Motors experiences a 1.5% decline in sales due to weakened fleet business

General Motors experienced a slight decline in sales during the first quarter, mainly due to issues with its fleet business. However, despite this overall decrease, the company remained the best-selling automaker in the United States. During this period, General Motors sold 594,233 new vehicles from January to March, which was only a 1.5% drop compared to the previous year. Retail sales actually increased by 6%, helping General Motors surpass Toyota as the top-selling automaker in the U.S.

General Motors’ pickup lineup saw a significant increase in sales during the first quarter of 2021, with a growth of 3.6%. This marked a positive trend since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. On the other hand, sales of General Motors’ electric vehicles decreased due to software issues and production delays, particularly affecting the Chevrolet Bolt. Fleet sales for General Motors also dropped by approximately 23% compared to the previous year.

Among General Motors’ brands, Buick reported an impressive increase in sales during Q1 of 2021, going up by 16.4% year-over-year. However, GMC experienced a decline in sales by 5%, while Chevrolet and Cadillac also slightly decreased compared to the previous year.
