Germany Celebrates National Veterans Day: Recognizing and Supporting Those Who Have Served Their Country

Germany has recently established a National Veterans Day to honor active and former soldiers of the Bundeswehr. This decision was supported by a large majority of members of the Bundestag, including all major political parties. The aim of this day is to show appreciation for their service and sacrifices. However, the Left group abstained from voting.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius emphasized the importance of Veterans Day as a long-overdue recognition of those who are willing to make great sacrifices for their country. He highlighted various operations and missions carried out by soldiers, such as those in Afghanistan, protecting merchant shipping, evacuations from crisis areas, and assistance during natural disasters like forest fires or the COVID-19 pandemic.

Germany has chosen to define veterans in the broadest possible terms, encompassing almost every active or former soldier within the Bundeswehr. This inclusive definition aims to avoid disputes over who qualifies as a veteran and recognizes diverse experiences and needs of those who have served their country.

There have been ongoing discussions about support provided to veterans after their service, with calls for improved care and social appreciation. In response to these concerns, a veterans office was established in Berlin as a central point of contact for former soldiers. Efforts are being made to enhance support services for veterans and create a national day that serves as a platform for recognition, gratitude, and exchange between veterans, their families, the Bundeswehr, society
