Google’s Gemini Nano Coming to Pixel 8 Smartphones: Breaking the Hardware Barrier with Generative AI

Google has announced that its generative AI model, Gemini Nano, will soon be available on the standard version of the Pixel 8 smartphone family, starting in June. This news comes after earlier reports suggested that hardware limitations would prevent the large language model (LLM) from reaching the Pixel 8.

However, Google’s vice president of devices and software services, Seang Chau, has now confirmed that the LLM adapted for smartphones will indeed reach the Pixel 8. The optimized model is similar to the Pixel 8 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S24 series and can run generative AI directly on the device without needing to connect to the cloud.

The AICore solution will eventually bring Gemini Nano to more Android devices by the end of the year, but it was previously stated that it would not reach the Pixel 8 due to hardware limitations. The main difference between the standard and Pro models of Pixel 8 is their RAM memory, with 4 GB for the standard version and 8 GB for the Pro version.

In addition to Gemini Nano’s release on June alongside new functionalities with Android 14 QPR3, new features such as ‘Summary’ in recorder tool and Gboard Smart Reply will also be available on Pixel 8. This announcement was made on Made by Google Podcast indicating that these features will come in next few months.
