Hot Weather Health: How to Keep Children Cool and Manage Fevers Effectively

According to the guidelines from the Ministry of Health, children with a fever above 38.5 degrees Celsius, especially those with a fever above 39 degrees, should be given fever reducers to alleviate symptoms and promote rest. It is safe for children with a fever to be in air-conditioned rooms with a temperature between 25-27 degrees Celsius and humidity around 50-60%. However, parents should avoid using warm compresses, covering the child with blankets or wrapping them up as it can lead to higher fever and dehydration. Instead, parents should dress their child in light and breathable clothing.

Parents should also ensure that their child drinks plenty of water or electrolyte solutions to aid in rehydrating the body. Milk and fruit juice can also help supplement vitamins. During hot weather, children can consume ice cream and cold beverages; however, after consuming these, it is advisable to give them a little warm water to maintain a normal throat temperature and prevent a sore throat. Children tend to forget to drink water often, making it crucial for parents to monitor their hydration status regularly by checking the color of their urine.

Maintaining good hygiene practices such as cleaning children’s toys regularly can help prevent illnesses from spreading. Sick children should stay at home until they recover fully to prevent infecting others. Limiting close contact with flu patients and suspected individuals is also recommended to minimize the risk of infection.

If unusual symptoms such as continuous high fever above 39 degrees Celsius or difficulty breathing arise during hot weather, parents should seek medical attention immediately.

In summary, keeping children cool during hot weather while ensuring proper hydration is crucial for managing fevers effectively. Parents must monitor their child’s health closely and seek medical attention when necessary while following guidelines from the Ministry of Health on appropriate treatments for fevers in children.
