Iowa educators Susan Wenger and Brenda Kaufmann named finalists for Presidential Awards in Mathematics and Science Teaching”.

Two exceptional Iowa educators, Susan Wenger and Brenda Kaufmann, have been named finalists for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Susan teaches at Valley Elementary School in Elgin and is being recognized for her outstanding work in mathematics, while Brenda is a second-grade teacher at North Tama Elementary School in Traer and has been acknowledged for her contributions to science education.

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) is a prestigious recognition program that honors kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers who excel in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science. Since its inception in 1983, over 5,200 educators from all 50 states, Department of Defense Education Activity schools, and six U.S. jurisdictions have been honored through this program.

Recipients of the PAEMST award are chosen based on their exceptional teaching skills, deep subject knowledge, ability to inspire and support student success. They serve as role models within their communities and demonstrate the profound impact that teachers can have on student achievement. The winners will receive a paid trip to Washington D.C., where they will be recognized at events and receive professional development opportunities. In addition to this recognition, they will also receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation as well as a certificate signed by the President of the United States.

The Iowa Department of Education is thrilled to recognize these talented educators who embody the dedication and commitment required to excel as teachers
