The Israeli military carried out a daring mission to rescue two hostages, Fernando Marman and Louis Har, from the Gaza Strip. The rescue operation involved intelligence services, elite units, and air forces and lasted for over an hour and a half.
The raid was coordinated by a war room of the Shin Bet’s internal intelligence services. Immediately after the operation began, Israeli forces raided the apartment where the hostages were being held with explosives. The three captors were killed on sight, and the special forces shielded the hostages with their bodies.
The operation also involved ensuring that the hostages were returned safely to Israel. After the special forces raid, Hamas militants opened fire from nearby buildings while the Israeli air force launched bombing missions against Hamas military sites and command centers. The escape was covered by Shayetet 13 commando of the navy and the 7th Armored Brigade.
About an hour after being pulled from their apartment, Marman and Har were taken out of Rafah in armored vehicles before being put onto a helicopter that flew them back to Israel. After undergoing medical tests, they were found to be in good condition and were reunited with their families once again. Only one of those involved in the operation was slightly injured.
The two kidnapped Israelis had dual nationality – Argentine as well as Israeli – and had been taken during a violent Hamas attack on Kibbutz Nir Yiyzhak on October 7th. Along with them, Clara Marman (62), sister of Fernando Marman’s first wife; companion of Louis Har’s second wife; Gabriela (58), sister of Fernando Marman’s first wife; Mia Leimberg (17), daughter of Gabriela had also been abducted during this attack. This mission marks only the second successful rescue since the start of Operation Protective Edge in 2014. Another attempt failed resulting in one death while three other hostages managed to free themselves but mistakenly shot by Israeli soldiers resulting in their deaths shortly after their release
