In a stunning display, Jasmine Paolini reached the fourth round at Wimbledon for the first time in her career by defeating Bianca Andreescu. The seventh-seeded Italian player won 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 on Court One under the roof, leaving Andreescu struggling to maintain her form. Paolini, who is 28 years old and from Italy, had never won a match at Wimbledon before this year and her journey to the second week was all the more remarkable.
Paolini’s recent surge in form has been impressive as she had not gone beyond the second round of a Grand Slam until 2024. In the next round, she will face either Madison Keys or Marta Kostyuk. Meanwhile, Emma Navarro, who is seeded 19th, defeated Diana Shnaider in a hard-fought match to set up a match against either Coco Gauff or Britain’s Sonay Kartal in the next round.
The match between Paolini and Andreescu was a rematch of their French Open third round encounter five weeks prior which Paolini also won in three sets. Andreescu struggled to maintain her form in this match and lost the final six games of the second set.
Delighted with her performance, Paolini said “I think I played a good match. I tried to be aggressive because if not I am going to have to run so much.”
