Katy ISD Implements New Technology Policy: No Personal Devices in Classrooms Starting Next Year

A new technology policy has been implemented in the Katy Independent School District that prohibits students from using their personal devices, such as cell phones, in the classroom starting next year. This change is part of the Class 1:1 program, which is being made possible by a 2023 bond. As part of this program, every student in third through 12th grade will receive a Chromebook from the district in August, replacing their personal devices during class time.

The goal of this new policy is to create consistency in instruction and to ensure that all students have access to the same technology. The district believes that removing personal devices will help students focus on learning and minimize distractions in the classroom. However, some parents have expressed concerns about the policy and its potential impact on their children’s education.

One parent, Valentina Sepic, supports the decision to remove personal devices from the learning environment. She believes that they are a distraction and should not be used during class time. On the other hand, Nidhi Kundalia prefers traditional methods of learning and believes that technology should be used less frequently. She also raises concerns about the cost of maintaining laptops once they are distributed to students.

Despite differing opinions among parents regarding technology’s role in education, Katy ISD promises to keep the community updated on any developments related to the new policy. Only time will tell how this new policy will impact students and their learning experiences in Katy ISD.
