KBR Secures Contract for Green Ammonia Technology in Norway: A Milestone for the Green Energy Industry

In a significant milestone for the green energy industry, US engineering company KBR has secured a contract to provide its zero-carbon green ammonia technology K-GreeN for the Holmaneset green energy project in Norway. This project, developed by Australia-based Fortescue, is set to produce 675 metric tonnes per day of green ammonia using electrolyzers powered by renewable hydropower.

KBR’s involvement in this project will bring its proprietary engineering design and front-end engineering design (FEED) support services to the table. This collaboration aligns with Fortescua’s ESG objectives and aims to play a significant role in the development of the green energy value chain and decarbonization of hard-to-abate industries.

Fortescua is targeting construction to begin in 2025 and operations to commence in 2027, pending final approvals from the board. In early 2024, Fortescua awarded Tecnimont, a business unit of Italy’s Maire, the FEED work for the plant. Tecnimont is also expected to submit an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) proposal for the plant’s realization as part of the agreement.

This project has made significant strides already, achieving milestones such as securing €203.7 million in funding from the European Union (EU) and securing renewable power through a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Statkraft. These developments reflect Fortescua’s commitment to advancing sustainable and environmentally friendly energy solutions in the region.

Jay Ibrahim, President of KBR Sustainable Technology Solutions expressed his excitement about working with Fortescua on this project saying “We are thrilled about our partnership with Fortescua on this groundbreaking project that will help us advance our shared goal of decarbonizing hard-to-abate industries.”
