A lioness and her cubs were having a meal in a tree when a group of hungry hyenas arrived, hoping to snatch some leftovers. Suddenly, one of the cubs jumped down from the tree, seemingly trying to escape the scene. But the hyenas quickly surrounded it, their jaws snapping menacingly.
“The cub was terrified; it froze,” said Benji Solms, a guide at Serondella Game Lodge in Kruger National Park in South Africa. “The loud howls of the hyenas and their frightening appearance made him tremble in his skin. He realized that he had made a grave mistake.”
The mother lion sensed danger and dropped the impala carcass from the tree, landing gracefully on the ground to confront the hyenas.
“She gave them an icy stare and stood tall,” Solms said. “It worked, and the hyenas turned their attention from the helpless cub to the meat in front of them.”
The hyenas scurried off to feed on the carcass, leaving the cub safe thanks to its brave mother who put dinner aside to save it. The story originally appeared on For The Win.
