Recently, a small fire broke out on the world’s largest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas. The incident occurred while the ship was docked in Costa Maya, Mexico. According to a Royal Caribbean spokesperson, the fire was quickly extinguished and there were no injuries.
The Icon of the Seas is nearly 1,200 feet long and 250,800 gross tons. Despite this incident, the impact on board was minimal. Passengers were alerted about the incident through on-board announcements and social media users in an Icon of the Seas Facebook group mentioned minor disruptions to their day. However, things quickly returned to normal and it is now en route to the Mexican island of Cozumel.
The $2 billion Icon of the Seas made headlines earlier this year with its record-breaking features, including seven swimming pools and a 17,000-square-foot water park. Fires on cruise ships are not common but not uncommon according to a Royal Caribbean spokesperson. Most fires are handled swiftly and with minimal disruption to passengers.
