A 60-year-old man’s wife recounted to Mako Health that her husband typically feeds the birds in their home every morning. One morning, he discovered a large snake under their birdcage. Without hesitation, he grabbed the snake and placed it in a bucket, attempting to wrestle with it. Unfortunately, the snake bit him on the hand after he cut off its head in self-defense.
The medical team administered adrenaline, fluids, and serum to counteract the venom. However, the man experienced heart rhythm disorders following the snake bite, which could potentially escalate into a life-threatening condition. Dr. Salim Halavi, the director of the emergency room at Carmel Medical Center, disclosed that the man was bitten by a viper-type snake on his left hand.
With an increase in snake bites during the hot season, Doral Erzuan, a senior MDA paramedic and snake catcher, highlighted the importance of professional intervention when dealing with snakes. He emphasized that attempting to capture or kill a snake on your own could lead to further harm, as demonstrated by the recent case where a man grappled with a venomous snake.
Erzuan shared advice on preventing snakes from entering homes, including eliminating hiding spots and sources of food, closing windows, and installing protective nets. Furthermore, he cautioned against common misconceptions about snake bite first aid, underscoring the importance of seeking immediate medical assistance and refraining from detrimental practices such as sucking out venom or applying ice.
In light of recent snake bite incidents involving other individuals, Erzuan underscored the need for public awareness and caution when encountering snakes. By adopting preventive measures and seeking professional assistance
