Microsoft strengthens its dedication to AI with new hire Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind

Microsoft is making a strong push into artificial intelligence (AI) as a key technology that has contributed to its status as the world’s most valuable company, in part due to its partnership with OpenAI. The company’s CEO, Satya Nadella, recently announced a high-profile addition to the team: Mustafa Suleyman, a co-founder of DeepMind, which is owned by Google, and the former head of Inflection, another AI company he co-founded.

Nadella emphasized the importance of bold innovation in a statement announcing Suleyman’s appointment, noting that he has known and admired him for several years for his visionary work in the AI field. Along with Karén Simonyan, another Inflection co-founder, Suleyman will lead Microsoft AI, a new organization focused on advancing AI tools like Copilot, as well as other consumer products and research in the field.

The influx of new talent is expected to accelerate Microsoft’s AI initiatives and help the company realize its vision of making AI accessible and beneficial to everyone. Several members of the Inflection team are also joining Microsoft, bringing with them expertise and experience in AI research and product development. This move is expected to strengthen Microsoft’s collaboration with OpenAI, a strategic partnership that Nadella sees as essential for the company’s AI innovation.

Kevin Scott will continue in his role as CTO and EVP of AI at Microsoft, overseeing AI strategy and partnerships. Rajesh Jha will lead the development of Copilot for Microsoft 365 in collaboration with Suleyman and his team. With Google’s DeepMind being a pioneer in AI
