Survey Reveals Minnesota’s Low 3.8% Uninsured Rate

Minnesota has experienced a decrease in the number of uninsured residents, with 3.8% without health insurance last year, down from 4% in 2021. Although the reduction is not statistically significant, it means that an estimated 11,000 fewer individuals were uninsured in the past year. Despite this progress, there are still challenges to accessing affordable care for many Minnesotans.

The Minnesota Health Access Survey revealed that despite the increase in insurance coverage, some state residents have foregone care due to financial constraints. There are also concerns about the financial protection offered by health insurance, highlighting ongoing challenges in the healthcare system.

Dr. Brooke Cunningham, the state Health Commissioner, expressed optimism about the decreasing uninsurance rate but cautioned that these rates are subject to change. Insurance and healthcare costs remain significant barriers for many Minnesotans, underscoring the need for continued efforts to improve access to affordable care.

In 2021, Minnesota saw expanded access to health insurance through the Medicaid program due to suspension of eligibility checks amidst COVID-19 pandemic. However as eligibility checks resumed some residents lost Medicaid coverage which raised concerns about gaps in insurance coverage. The Health Department noted that most uninsured individuals in Minnesota experience long-term uninsurance having been without coverage for a year or longer.

Stefan Gildemeister, director of state’s Health Economics Program warned that increase prior public program coverage among short-term uninsured could signal challenges in transitioning to other forms of coverage. It is essential to address gaps in coverage and ensure individuals have access to consistent and affordable healthcare options promote better health outcomes for all Minnesotans.

In conclusion, while Minnesota has made progress towards reducing the number of uninsured residents last year, it is crucial to continue addressing barriers such as cost and ensuring individuals have access to consistent and affordable healthcare options for better health outcomes.
