Admiral Samuel Paparo has taken command of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (Indopacom) with a clear mission: to address the growing challenges in the region and defend against potential threats from adversaries. During his inauguration ceremony in Hawaii, he strongly condemned China’s intrusive and expansionist claims in the Indo-Pacific, calling them “illegal, coercive, aggressive, and deceptive.” He also updated the definition of the South China Sea as a “grey” zone, including Russia, North Korea, and violent extremist organizations in the category.
As he assumed command, Paparo declared that the Indopacom would strive for peaceful resolution of conflicts while being prepared to fight any adversary that threatens peace, security, stability, and the well-being of the nation and its allies. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin emphasized China’s coercive behavior in the Indo-Pacific, highlighting their ability to dominate the region.
With his extensive experience in aviation and a distinguished military background, Paparo is well-equipped to lead Indopacom. He previously led the Navy’s Pacific Fleet and spearheaded experiments with unmanned systems. Paparo has called for the establishment of a force of small drones to help defend against a potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan.
Paparo is originally from Morton, Pennsylvania and is of Italian-American descent. He has logged thousands of flight hours in various aircraft and graduated from prominent military institutions. His leadership will be crucial in maintaining peace and security amidst growing challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.
Overall, Admiral Samuel Paparo’s appointment as head of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command marks a crucial turning point in addressing security concerns in the region and defending against potential threats from adversaries such as China.
