The Japanese Swimming Federation (JASF) has announced the qualification criteria for the 2024 World Championships, which will be held in Doha, Qatar in February. To be considered for selection, swimmers must have achieved the ‘dispatch III’ time from the organization’s Paris Olympic Selection Criteria. A maximum roster count of 10 has been specified.
The following competitions will be taken into account for selection: the 2023 Japan Championships, the 2023 Japan Open, the 2023 World Championships, the 2023 World University Games, and the 2022 (2023) Asian Games. The only competition that has not yet been held is the Japan Open, which is scheduled to take place from November 30th to December 3rd.
As of now, only three swimmers have hit the qualification times at approved competitions: Katsuhiro Matsumoto achieved a qualifying time in the men’s 100m fly event at the 2022 (2023) Asian Games; Tomoru Honda achieved a qualifying time in the men’s 400m IM event at the same competition; and Ageha Tanigawa achieved a qualifying time in women’s breaststroke at Tokyo Swimming Center Invitational. Additionally, one swimmer has earned a qualifying time at a non-qualifying meet: Reona Aoki achieved a qualifying time in women’s breaststroke at Tokyo Swimming Center Invitational.
