High school students in New Jersey were recognized for their outstanding achievements in scientific research and experimentation at the New Jersey Southern Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. The event, hosted by Ocean County College at Lakehurst Naval Air Station Base, aims to promote research and experimentation in the sciences, engineering, and mathematics. Michael Danko, a marine recreation agent for the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium and member of the NJSJSHS executive board, presented awards for the top environmental paper and top environmental poster.
Maya Abdelaal from the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science (MATES) received the award for the top environmental paper for her work on assessing airborne bacteria abundance in sea foam aerosol. Anthony Bilotti, also from MATES, was awarded for the top environmental poster for his project developing an IOS application to determine the appropriate size of a marine species for harvesting.
The overall winner of the NJSJSHS was Shloka Shriram from Princeton High School, who will be presenting her research on novel quantum materials for low power electronics at the 62nd National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. The event highlights the dedication and hard work of high school students in scientific research and experimentation.
