Yankees acquire INF Jon Berti from Marlins following DJ LeMahieu’s foot injury

In 2023, Jon Berti had a standout year and is now a member of the New York Yankees. The team quickly addressed the absence of DJ LeMahieu due to injury by acquiring Berti from the Miami Marlins. This move came shortly after it was announced that LeMahieu would start the season on the injured list with a bruised foot.

Berti was considered an above-average fielder at both shortstop and third base based on stats like outs above average and defensive runs saved. With the Yankees, he is expected to primarily play at third base, a position previously held by LeMahieu. The other infield positions are fairly set with Anthony Volpe at shortstop, Gleyber Torres at second base, and Anthony Rizzo at first base. Although Oswaldo Cabrera was initially considered for third base, he will likely serve as a backup.

The trade involved a three-team agreement that included the Yankees sending outfield prospect John Cruz to the Marlins and catcher Ben Rortvedt to the Tampa Bay Rays. In return, the Yankees received Jon Berti while the Rays acquired outfield prospect Shane Sasaki. Cruz is ranked as the 28th best prospect in the Yankees’ system according to MLB Pipeline, while Sasaki is not in the top 30 rankings.

In his season with the Marlins, Berti’s batting average of .294, on-base percentage of .344, and slugging percentage of .405 earned him a career-best 103 OPS+
