In the second round of the French Open in 2023, Andrey Rublev advanced to the third round with a hard-fought victory over Taro Daniel. The sixth seed from Russia faced a challenge from Japan’s Daniel before emerging triumphant with a score of 6-2 6-7 (3-7) 6-3 7-5.
Despite struggling with his on-court demeanor and throwing his racquet in frustration at times, Rublev showed resilience on Court Simonne-Mathieu and eventually secured the win in a match that lasted three hours and 11 minutes. This marked Rublev’s first Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance.
Up next for Rublev is a match against either Pedro Martinez or Thiago Agustin Tirante in the following round. Meanwhile, French number one and 17th seed Ugo Humbert suffered a defeat to Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego earlier in the day.
On day one of the tournament in Paris, world number three Carlos Alcaraz and Britain’s Andy Murray were also in action. Alcaraz faced lucky loser J.J. Wolf, while Murray took on his old rival Stan Wawrinka in the night session on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
