Princeton Fencers Shine at Junior World Championships: Alec Brooke Wins Silver Medal in Épée and Tatiana Nazlymov Qualifies for Olympics

Princeton freshman Alec Brooke has just won a silver medal in épée at the Junior World Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on April 15th. In a field with over 200 fencers, Brooke finished as the runner-up after an impressive performance.

During the pool rounds, Brooke had a record of 5-1, landing him in 25th place. Moving on to the elimination bracket, Brooke won six consecutive bouts to make it to the final, defeating opponents such as Doruk Erolcevik from Turkey, Takayuki Yuminaga from Japan, and Tristan Lumineau from Britain. In a closely contested final, Brooke fell just short to Alban Aebersold from Switzerland with a score of 15-14.

Brooke’s fellow Princeton teammate, Tatiana Nazlymov, also put on an impressive showing at the Junior World Championships. In the women’s saber competition, she finished 15th out of 132 fencers, with a record of 4-2 in the pool rounds. Nazlymov made it to the round of 16, where she faced off against Alexandra Kuvaeva from Georgia and was eliminated with a score of 15-12. Despite this setback, Nazlymov had victories over fencers from Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, and Bulgaria throughout the competition.

Nazlymov has earned a spot in the Olympics and will be representing Team USA in both the individual and team women’s saber competitions. The results of her competition can be found online showcasing her talent and potential in the fencing world.
