In a significant development, researchers at a Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory have created ChatGrid, a cutting-edge technology that will be used to monitor the power grid using generative AI and advanced computer systems. The technology will allow operators to quickly make decisions in the event of disruptions and streamline their decision-making process.

ChatGrid was developed by Shrirang Abhyankar, an optimization and grid modeling researcher at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), along with former PNNL intern Sichen Jin. The program enables grid operators to ask questions about the grid and receive immediate responses, allowing them to query data and receive instantaneous answers. This new approach streamlines decision-making and will provide valuable information to operators about generation capacity, voltage, power flow, and clean energy sources across the grid.

The technology is currently in the testing phase, but it has the potential to play a key role in restoring power efficiently to millions of people in the event of a disruption. It could also assist in bringing online various clean energy projects included in the Biden administration’s infrastructure bill. There is no specific timeline for when ChatGrid will be fully operational.
