Revolutionizing Alzheimer’s Diagnosis: Israel Adds Blood Test to International Criteria

In Israel, a new blood test for the early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease has been introduced and added to the diagnostic criteria of the International Alzheimer’s Association. This test, along with the spinal fluid test already performed in several hospitals in Israel, aims to diagnose the disease as early as possible, even before symptoms appear, with the hope of potentially delaying its progression.

Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative condition that affects approximately 120,000 people in Israel, characterized by memory loss, deterioration in mental function, and cognitive impairment. Patients may also experience hypervigilance, hallucinations, and insomnia. Currently, diagnosis relies on symptoms and some hospitals are incorporating tests for disease proteins in spinal fluid into the diagnostic process.

In the USA, a new blood test has been approved for diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease based on the presence of specific proteins in the blood. This test is now being performed in some hospitals in Israel as well. The international recommendations for diagnosis through blood tests have been added to the criteria for diagnosing the disease, marking a significant step towards improving treatment for patients.

Professionals in the field believe that early diagnosis through accurate blood tests could revolutionize Alzheimer’s research and treatment. With the ability to detect the disease years before symptoms appear, individuals may have access to early treatment or lifestyle changes that could help slow down or even prevent further progression of this debilitating condition. The shift towards more accurate diagnosis based on biomarkers represents a major advancement in our understanding and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.
