Liver Cancer in Young People: What Leads to its Development?

In recent years, liver cancer rates among young people have been on the rise in Vietnam. Dr. Vu Truong Khanh, Head of the Department of Gastroenterology at Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi, has observed this trend and highlighted the factors contributing to it. Unhealthy lifestyle choices such as smoking, excessive drinking, poor diet, environmental pollution, lack of exercise, and inadequate sleep habits are among the culprits.

Dr. Khanh emphasized that alcohol abuse is a significant contributor to liver disease and cancer. Prolonged consumption can lead to fatty liver disease, hepatitis, cirrhosis, and ultimately liver cancer. He cited cases of cirrhosis complicated by esophageal bleeding in patients who had consumed alcohol excessively over time as evidence of the serious consequences of alcohol abuse.

Obesity and genetic factors also play a role in liver cancer development, particularly in young individuals who consume processed foods high in fat and salt. These unhealthy habits put additional strain on the liver and increase the risk of developing cancerous cells.

Early detection is crucial for effective treatment and improved outcomes for liver cancer patients. However, initial symptoms may be nonspecific like fatigue, yellow urine, and liver discomfort. If left untreated, symptoms can progress to more severe stages such as itching, jaundice, weight loss pain in the upper abdomen enlarged liver ascites which can make diagnosis challenging.

To reduce the risk of liver diseases including cancer regular screening is recommended for individuals at high risk such as those with a family history of the disease viral infections hepatitis cirrhosis obesity or diabetes.

Adopting healthy eating habits avoiding smoking excessive alcohol consumption maintaining a healthy weight exercising regularly receiving hepatitis vaccinations are all important steps towards reducing the risk of developing liver diseases including cancer.
