According to intelligence reports from the US, UK, and other Western countries, an average of 1,200 Russian troops were killed or wounded per day in May. This was the highest daily casualty rate reported since the conflict began in February 2022. Despite this, Russia has been able to recruit new soldiers at a rapid pace, while Ukraine struggles to find new recruits.
UK military intelligence estimated that the total number of Russian troops killed or wounded in the conflict is around 500,000. However, this does not distinguish between those killed and wounded. On September 2022 Russia drafted 300,000 civilians into the military but US officials believe that another draft will not be necessary in the near future.
The increase in casualties in May occurred as Russia escalated its attacks on Ukrainian positions in the Kharkiv region. These attacks were known as “human wave” or “meat grinder” attacks that were used with some success in previous battles but are proving less effective now. In response to these attacks Ukraine has been employing high-casualty tactics such as using artillery fire and drones to attack Russian positions.
Despite their efforts to replace losses through recruitment and mercenaries, Russia continues to struggle with high casualty rates for its troops. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine shows no signs of slowing down and continues to pose a threat to both countries’ security interests.
