Safe Fiesta: San Antonio Ensuring Food Safety During Festivities

Fiesta is once again taking place in San Antonio, and the city is buzzing with excitement as people indulge in delicious food and drinks. However, it’s essential to prioritize safety while consuming these treats. A KSAT team recently accompanied San Antonio Metropolitan Health District inspectors to observe how they are ensuring food safety during Fiesta.

According to Deborah Liu, a Metro Health environmental health officer, consuming unsafe food can lead to severe consequences. Sometimes, food may not be cooked properly, leading to foodborne illnesses that may not manifest until the next day. To prevent such occurrences, inspectors closely monitor vendors at every Fiesta event.

Inspectors examine various aspects of food safety, including ensuring that food is at the right temperature, vendors follow proper sanitation practices, and have appropriate protective gear like gloves, hats or hairnets. If a vendor violates food safety regulations, they are given an opportunity to rectify the issue; however, failure could result in losing their permit to operate and getting shut down.

If anyone attending Fiesta notices anything concerning regarding food safety, they should immediately contact 311 and report it. By being vigilant and prioritizing hygiene and safety, everyone can enjoy Fiesta festivities without any risk of getting sick.
