7 Things to Know About the Rabies Vaccine

Rabies vaccination is critical for preventing the deadly disease, with a complete regimen and timely administration being key factors. Dr. Bui Thanh Phong, Medical Manager of the VNVC Vaccination System, emphasized the importance of prompt vaccination to prevent rabies, which has a high mortality rate. Despite widespread awareness, many deaths still occur due to lack of vaccination after being bitten or scratched by animals. In the first three months of 2024, 27 deaths from rabies were reported in Vietnam, highlighting the urgency of vaccination.

To ensure people understand the importance and are vaccinated promptly, Dr. Phong outlined seven key points regarding rabies vaccination. It is essential to receive the vaccine early after an animal bite to produce specific antibodies that prevent the rabies virus from reaching the nervous system. Vaccination should be accompanied by anti-rabies serum for enhanced effectiveness. Even if the animal appears healthy after a bite, vaccination is still necessary as the virus can have a long incubation period before symptoms manifest.

Contrary to popular beliefs, people vaccinated against rabies do not need to abstain from sexual activity. However, during the vaccination period, it is advisable to avoid strenuous physical activities and substances that may reduce the efficacy of the vaccine. A single shot of the vaccine is insufficient to provide long-term immunity and necessitates a full regimen prescribed by a healthcare professional to prevent illness and death.

Pregnant women can safely receive the rabies vaccine without altering their vaccination schedule or harming their unborn child’s health. There is no evidence of fetal abnormalities due to vaccination, making it a crucial preventive measure for expectant mothers. Moreover, modern rabies vaccines available in Vietnam are safe, pure, and highly effective at preventing this deadly disease.

The cost of rabies vaccines varies depending on facility type and vaccine availability but typically ranges between 250,000 VND to 500,000 VND per dose.
