Steward Health Care’s Financing Structure: A Challenge for Healthcare Reform in Massachusetts

Kate Walsh, the Health and Human Services Secretary in southeastern Massachusetts, recently addressed health care access, affordability and staffing issues during a discussion. She emphasized the challenges posed by the property and leasing structures of Steward Health Care hospitals. The for-profit system, which operates under private equity backing, has made it difficult to find a buyer due to its unique financing setup.

Walsh, an experienced health care executive with a track record at top hospitals and research institutions, described the situation at Steward as unprecedented in her career. The hospital had previously sold its physical properties and now leases them back, which she believes has deterred potential acquirers. Despite the complexities involved, Walsh stressed the importance of finding a solution that prioritizes patient care, family support and health care reform in eastern Massachusetts.

As discussions about the future of Steward Health Care continue, Walsh and her team are focused on exploring creative solutions to ensure that patients receive the care they need and that the broader health care system in the region can be reformed. With a team of experts dedicated to finding the best path forward, Walsh remains committed to addressing the challenges presented by the current situation and working towards a resolution that benefits all stakeholders involved.
