The UNESCO Chair in Marine Sciences Tackles Pollution, Restores Ecosystems and Promotes Sustainable Practices in the Arabian Gulf

The UNESCO Chair in Marine Sciences, led by Prof. Vethamony and his team, plays a crucial role in protecting the Arabian Gulf from pollution. With a focus on oil, industrial effluents, and microplastics, they closely monitor the impact of human activities on local flora and fauna. Despite the aftermath of the major oil spill during the 1991 Gulf War, residues remain present as “tar mats,” affecting ecosystems in the region.

Collaborating with private sector partners, the team is engaged in projects aimed at restoring coastal and marine habitats in the Persian Gulf. Mangroves and coral reefs have suffered significant damage due to human activities and climate change. Restoration efforts are vital for combating climate change and preventing coastal erosion. Artificial coral reefs have shown promising results as fish populations begin to return.

In addition to restoration efforts, partnerships with institutions in Malaysia and Japan are focused on innovative aquaculture research projects aimed at addressing concerns about food security. One project explores the potential use of insect meal as a protein substitute for fish stocks under increasing pressure. The UNESCO Chair in Marine Sciences also collaborates with regional partners to promote sustainable ocean practices and encourage young professionals to pursue careers in this field.

As the first UNESCO Chair in marine sciences in the region, Prof. Vethamony is committed to strengthening actions through collaboration with other UNESCO Chairs on Technical and Vocational Education and Sustainable Development. Together they aim to build a sustainable future for the marine environment and inspire the next generation of marine conservationists.
