Sarah Spivey, a meteorologist at KSAT, conducted a balloon hovercraft experiment on Wednesday at Thousand Oaks Elementary. The experiment was part of the science with Sarah program in partnership with the San Antonio Zoo.
Students were given materials including a hot glue gun, old CD or DVD, large balloon, and pop-top cap to conduct the experiment. To conduct the experiment, students first decorated their CD or DVD if they desired. Then, using the hot glue, they glued the closed pop-top to the middle of the CD or DVD. Next, they blew up their balloon and twisted it – do not tie it! By twisting it, they temporarily kept the air from flowing out of the balloon. Finally, they put the balloon over the pop top and opened it to watch as their hovercraft floated on the table!
If you’d like Sarah and David to come to your school and conduct a science experiment live on KSAT, fill out this form. “Winners” are selected at random.
