Tragically, Kenyan marathon runner Kelvin Kiptum passed away at the age of 24 following a road accident in Kenya. His coach Garvais Hakizimana also lost his life in the same incident, which occurred in the Kaptagat area along Elgeyo Marakwet road.

Kiptum was known for his impressive athletic achievements, including winning the London Marathon and breaking Eliud Kipchoge’s world record at the Chicago Marathon just last year. He had been scheduled to participate in the Rotterdam Marathon in April of this year.

The loss of Kiptum was widely mourned as an incredible tragedy to the athletic community and the Kenyan nation. World Athletics president Seb Coe, Kenyan police commander Peter Mulinge, and former Kenyan Prime Minister all expressed condolences and paid tribute to Kiptum.
